U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

At the early undergraduate level, students enrol in mandatory courses covering fundamental areas in biology ranging from molecular biology, physiology, and biochemistry to organismic biology, ecology, and evolution. The different topics are generally covered by theoretical lectures along with practical courses. At the more advanced level, students may combine elective modules to specialize either in molecular and cellular biology or ecology and evolution. Graduates may find entry-level or research assistant jobs in the respective fields.

Ecology & evolutionary biology research focus on the units, structures, functions & changes within our biotic environment. It is characterized by an integrative, experimental, interdisciplinary approach. A deep understanding of these processes is a prerequisite for the conservation, protection & sustainable use of biodiversity & natural resources. This includes understanding the interactions of organisms with each other and the environment as well as the adaptive differentiation of species, populations & individuals in terms of their ecology, morphology, physiology, and reproductive biology.

In this study program the Universities of Salzburg and Linz are collaborating to cover important aspects of molecular mechanisms relevant for the function or dysfunction of cells, tissues, or organisms in biological processes such as diseases, immune responses, evolution, cancer, or aging. Such studies are supported by a very solid basics in (bio)chemistry, (bio)physics, mathematics, statistics, microbiology, genetics, and physiology. At the advanced stage, courses are offered in immunology, structural biology, cell structures, and systems biology.

Medical biology researches the biological principles that are essential for human health and disease. It combines diverse bioscientific disciplines and therefore enables a multifaceted, biological understanding of topics that are essential for medicine. The courses range from the small-scale structure of the cell, organs and organ systems to the biology of complex interpersonal interactions. In addition, graduates acquire important skills in dealing with model systems in preclinical research.

Although a small department, we pursue research at a very high and competitive level (e. g. top level publications, a large number of funded projects, collaboration with industry and academia). The tenured and tenure-track memebers of the department supervise a large number of PhD students, who are very active researchers, publishing regularly in high level journals and conference proceedings.

The department of mathematics in Salzburg offers a bachelor and master program in mathematics and a master program in data science. The math program follows international standards and provides ample possibilities for specialization. The data science program has an interdisciplinary emphasize and focuses on statistics. A special training program for actuarial studies and a supplementary program in applied statistics and data analysis are provided by us. Moreover we offer also a teacher training program as well as a doctoral program.

The research at the department of mathematics in Salzburg is focused on the following areas: analysis (with emphazise on PDEs), discrete mathematics (with emphasize on algebra and number theory), probability theory and statistics (with emphasize on copula theory, non-parametric and multivariate statistics), applied mathematics (with emphasize on FEM-methods for differential equations), geometry (with emphasize on convex and distance geometry). This provides a good mixture of areas in which fundamental research is done and areas with a lot of interaction with other sciences.

The bachelor program in mathematics in Salzburg gives a general introduction to mathematics following international standards and provides the possibility for specializations in fields which are oriented at the research areas of the department including approximation theory and PDEs, algebra and number theory, stochastic and distance geometry, non-parametric and multivariate statistics, FEM-methods for differential equations, actuarial studies. The program also provides the possibility to complement the training with knowledge from free subjects.

The master program in mathematics in Salzburg focuses in the mandatory program on PDEs, algebra and number theory, probability theory & statistics, numerical mathematics & optimization. Following at least three of these courses the program provides possibilities of specialization by elective courses and seminars which are coordinated with the main subjects. A major goal is that this education leads to high-standard master theses so that the absolvents are well prepared for a variety of jobs in economy, industry, public service but also for entering in a doctoral program.

The master´s program in Data Science centers around effective, smart, and responsible use of data for the gain of knowledge. The competencies are highly relevant for enterprises, governments, and other entities. Obtaining, modelling, analysing, and interpreting data are at the core of today´s science. The curriculum builds on mathematics/statistics and computer science but has a high degree of interdisciplinarity, involving ethics/philosophy, social science, and application areas from, e.g., bioinformatics to economics, law, digital communication, and geoinformatics.

In addition to the psychology programmes (BA and MA), the department of Psychology also offers a doctoral degree programme and is involved in the teacher training programme for the subject philosophy and psychology. In 2011, a highly competitive excellence programme for doctoral students financed by the national research funding was successfully acquired and could be prolonged for the third (and final) time. The huge number of students in these programmes is a big challenge for the department, nevertheless the number of degrees is among the best at the University of Salzburg.

The University of Salzburg has established Cognitive Neuroscience as one of its three main research areas, due to the outstandig research performance (in publications and funding) in the form of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience (CCNS). The research at the center focuses on the relationship between behavior and brain activity with state of the art neurocognitive methods: fMRI, MRI, EEG, TMS, eye movement detection and magnet encephalography (MEG). Additionally, there is a huge variety of further theoretical and practical research topics from all areas of psychology.

The BA programme in Psychology imparts basic knowledge in empirical research, the description and explanation of human behaviour and experience, taking into account the biological and sociocultural principles. It also provides basic knowledge in the application of psychological knowledge for the design of human living and working conditions and in the professional handling of psychosocial problem situations. The aim of the bachelor's degree in Psychology is to provide extensive basic training in essential theoretical content, diagnostic and empirical skills and the teaching of interventions.

The MA programme serves to deepen the learning outcomes of the BA programme. It also enables the deepening of basic knowledge in the application of psychological knowledge for the design of human living and working conditions and in the professional handling of psychological disorders and psychosocial life situations. The aim of the MA programme is to provide expert training in which specific theoretical content as well as diagnostic and empirical skills are deepened and intervention techniques are taught. The MA programme enables graduates to work independently in Austria & the EU.
