U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

The Department of Chemistry conducts research on all important fields of chemistry. For a long time, the core of "Mainz Chemistry" has been the research on macromolecules, which will continue to play an important role in the future. Meanwhile, almost unique in Germany is the access to a research reactor, which also allows studies of and with radioactive substances. Research on sustainable chemistry has also been brought into focus in recent years. Furthermore, there are various cooperations with industrial companies as well as with the non-university research institutes on campus.

The interplay between politics and economics, especially in international relations, is the central topic of this MA in Political Economy and International Relations. The main focus here is on institutions, and macro-level issues more generally, and hence also on the corresponding methods of inquiry. Besides, students are given broad options to pursue interdisciplinary interests not only in economics, but in the social sciences and humanities at large.
